50 Years Anniversary Celebrations

Mullahoran Central School proudly celebrated its Golden Jubilee, 50 years of excellence in education on Sunday, September 8th 2024. The day began with a special Mass in Our Lady of Lourdes Church at 10 a.m., attended by past and present pupils, teachers, staff, and friends of the school from across the decades. The Mass was co-celebrated by Fr. P.J. Hughes, our departing Parish Priest, whose dedication was instrumental in planning the event, alongside our new Parish Priest, Fr. Joe McGrath, and Fr. Kevin Fay, a former pupil who attended the school when it first opened in 1974.
Following the Mass, a nostalgic parade led the gathering to the school, where past pupils reunited with old friends, classmates, and staff. Visitors enjoyed an extensive exhibition of photographs and memorabilia spanning the school's five decades. A highlight of the day was the burying of a time capsule, preserving memories for future generations to uncover in another 50 years, along with the unveiling of a commemorative plaque to mark this historic occasion.
The celebrations continued into the evening with a special meal at the community centre, where the school paid tribute to some of its longest-serving members. May Fay and Marion Briody, the last two remaining teachers from the 1974-75 school year, along with Jimmy Smith, the only surviving member of the first Board of Management in 1975, were honoured with a beautiful painting of the school. This stunning piece, created by local artist Geraldine Campbell, who lives next door to the school, serves as a heartfelt tribute to the enduring impact of those who have shaped Mullahoran Central School over the years.
The Golden Jubilee was a truly special occasion, filled with joy, reflection, and a deep appreciation for the generations who have made our school the vibrant and nurturing community it is today. As we look ahead to the next 50 years, we do so with gratitude for our past and excitement for the future. Here’s to another half-century of learning, growth, and cherished memories at Mullahoran Central School!
